The entire festival season is cancelled. Including one that's both small enough and late enough not to matter, that also supports a local brewery that is now facing bankruptcy, but they were going to feature While She Sleeps and I guess lyrics like "we're building walls where there should have been bridges" irk the establishment. Well, at least the goth night of the millennium got itself a replacement date.

Oh, and my sister's girlfriend, who lives in a one-room student flat without a balcony, decided to venture out into the world in search for a quiet place to read a book, found an abandoned park bench … and was promptly given a bollocking by the police. This place is becoming the V for Vendetta universe.

Also, online teaching is awful.

Yeah, we are lucky that here, no one has said anything to us for just being out in public. I've gone on drives just to get out of the house but I don't get out of the car. I get both sides of the argument. Like they reopened the beaches in my state and they're packed. They shouldn't have to close the beaches. People should still be free to go walk or jog on the beach--- but instead they're crammed with people set up partying, which in our situation with our number of cases, just isn't smart. If the people in my state used common sense, things wouldn't have to close. For the festival thing, I feel you. I'm just hoping things look better by this fall! I'll be super bummed if they cancel Halloween!
I mean, my house will still be goth AF, but I love trick or treating and all the stuff that happens.

I was fortunate, I still have my job and was paid to work from home, despite much of the meaningful work only being possible with the systems on site. Just started going back to the office, but it's not full time, they want to slowly increase the amount of people that are allowed on premise at any given time.

So yeah, fortunate to not have many personal misfortunes. My sleep schedule is way out of wack. There's to many distractions. Consequently I feel like I have less time to relax and have a diminishing sense of fulfillment as time passes.

What I worry about the most is the massive political, economical, and social fallout that has only just begun.

The feeling like you have less time--- I agree actually. I need my routine back.
I think our economy will come back quicker than people think however I totally agree things are going to be super messed up for awhile. My next physical days for work are the 3rd week of May. We all have to go but they're saying we won't all be in the same room at the same time.
How many people do you know who ended up with the virus or died?
I lost 2 people last week and this week I've got a coworker and a student with it, both in the hospital.

I'm really sorry to hear that- these deaths of people you knew- where they elderly or have pre-existing respiratory conditions?

No one I know personally has deaths or had a positive test for the virus. People here are (or were) taking it very seriously. Two weeks ago, 95% of people had on masks, the numbers have dropped to around 40%. A lot of old locals too. No rebellious public orgies though, so there is that.

Of the people who I know who have died I'd day half were elderly/had pre existing conditions.
The other half were young adults to middle age, no pre existing health conditions.
A girl who went to my high school but is several years younger than me died of it.
One of my students has it right now. One of my teachers from high school died of it last week. My boss's mom died of it last week as well. It's just everywhere here.
I'm glad it's not bad where you are!

It's not so bad in my immediate reach, but for the rest of Los Angeles county (it's a big area) and state of California, it is certainly up there! Following Mardi Gras, Lousiana overtook California for deaths/cases, but in California the "curve" isn't "flattening" as well as Lousiana. and as now California has about 400 more deaths.

It seems like the defiant (for lack of a better word) or laxer states are fairing a bit better, but then, they may not have population densities as high as the more affected areas.

I think population density has been a big obstacle. It blew up here after Mardi Gras. No doubt Mardi Gras is what spread it--- possibly even nation wide. We have an extra 1.5-2.5 million people come here just for Mardi Gras.
I'm not sure if I can agree about laxer states fairing better as there can be no state more lax than mine. We closed school but no one stayed home. No one wears masks. They used cell phone data to determine who's been staying home nationwide and Louisiana got an F. We were one of the worst states in the country. Everyone is just acting like nothing is going on.
That said--- we have particularly brutal seasonal flu seasons here as well for the same reasons. No one will stay home when they're sick. They need to go to Walmart every single day and give their kids with 104 degree fever a dose of Tylenol them shove them on the school bus.

No one I know has gotten the virus, not a neighbor or family member. I had no job before corona or now. I go outside to support a bad smoking habit. I go right by my house, no one is ever outside where I am at, I wash my hands afterwards.

I wear mask/gloves when I have to get groceries or when I order pizza or buy McDonalds. That's all I go out for food. Over here we have glass walls set up in store check outs/fast food places to block contact. As for Pizza Hut you have to drive up to the place and they walk out with masks and gloves and don't talk to you. I just pay before hand on my phone.

If you do get corona smoking makes it worse. But I actually heard on NPR radio station a doctor guest said nicotine might help prevent getting corona, but I doubt that. It sucks I haven't gotten the 1,200 dollars from Trump.

I'm glad no one you know has it---several of my students now do.
So much for kids not getting it.
Why didn't you get your check though???

Maybe because I was suppose to file taxes online which I did but it was just one day before it was due on May the 5th, I did it on the 4th. But at the same time they said SSI people get it automatically added into their bank account with no tax return needed. So I dunno what went wrong.

Yeah that was my thought. My cousin is on SSI with 2 kids and I don't think she even files taxes. Her mom might?
They all got checks. I thought it was automatic if you're on SSI.

Damn. :/ Sorry to hear about the deaths. Is everything better personally? Son OK?

As for me life hasn't changed much at all, I've been working from home for a month, saving in on commuting time, taking longer walks for lunch instead, feeling like I should have more time to spare but it doesn't seem like it at all... doing all the shopping for my folks now so that's a small part of it, but it's weird how all days melt together when there aren't any spectacular interactions to keep them apart in memory.

Bit worried about all the population oppression potential in the lieu of actually keeping people safe that this pandemic brings with it too.

Also all spring concert plans cancelled. A few flights cancelled. Vacation plans radically adjusted. Superficial problems in comparison. I just have one buddy IRL who has it, and then you online, other cases just by hearsay.

Really hoping my parents manage to stay free though. Apparently they're giving old people in critical condition morphine instead of oxygen at hospitals here, which effectively drains the oxygen level in their blood instead, seems more like a death trap than help...

My boss's momma died of it, and 2 of my coworkers aunts died from it. I have a student with it right now.
My son is doing a lot better, thanks for asking.
I went back to work today. Wore a mask. :-(

Aw man... hope the student pulls through at least. I guess you might be immune to it at this point at least? Hope for no further mutations over there.

I'm gonna have the antibody testing soon. Do you guys have that yet? And my student has improved a lot.

Awesome. Hmm I don't know, nobody I know has undergone any kind of testing, though they do plan to start testing more people. As far as I know it's still limited to risk groups only.

Do you think you've had it or have been exposed? I've been exposed twice and sick once.

Well I've had a couple lighter colds the last month or so, felt tired a lot, some people seem to get light symptoms so I don't know really. Hard to know if you've been exposed for the same reason, people in close vicinity do cough occasionally. My buddy IRL's been home for four weeks so far so being able to just get a quick whiff of this and then be fine feels like a bit wishful thinking.

Second exposure before or after you were sick? And not within the two week incubation time?

Both exposures before I was sick.
Once, about 2 weeks prior, once 2 days prior.
So I'm super curious if I had it!

Ah it could've been just the first one then too, or both, immune system could have trouble with a cumulative increase. You're not sure you had it though?! Weren't you super sick?

It felt like a minor case of the flu followed by like a week of bad couching, so I'm not sure. B

Hmmm! A minor case of flu for you sure sounded serious though! Super curious now too... hope you have that antibody armor now then. Futureproof for the flu.

I promise not to die if you promise not to die

If only we really were eternal. :) Hard to make promises you can't keep, but I'll definitely fight any impending disease as fiercely as possible by a mere mortal such as myself! Do hope you do too.
